In multilingual families, parents often have questions about how best to support their child’s language development.
Should each parent speak a different language?
Can learning more than one language cause confusion or delay speech?
What if a child understands a home language but prefers to speak English?
And is there a point when it becomes too late to introduce another language?
Join us for an evidence-informed conversation exploring how children learn and use multiple languages, what parents can realistically expect, and practical ways to support language development at home. We’ll also look at some of the common myths around multilingualism and when differences in a child’s communication may warrant additional support.
PARENTS WILL WALK AWAY WITH:
- A better understanding of how children learn and develop two or more languages
- Clarity around common myths, including whether multiple languages can cause confusion or speech and language delays
- Guidance on when and how to introduce another language, and whether it can ever be “too late”.
- Practical ways to encourage a home language when a child prefers the language used at nursery, school or in the wider community.
- A better understanding of typical multilingual language development and when additional support or assessment may be helpful
