Eating Disorders (Schools)

What is it?

Schools play a crucial role in detecting, supporting and working with young people, parents and clinicians of those with disordered eating or established eating disorders. They are often first to identify early signs of disordered eating and so it is important to know how best to respond and signpost for further support.

The LightHouse Arabia offers evidence-based treatment for eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, other eating and feeding disorders in school aged children and adolescents, and adults, including management of body dysmorphia, depression and anxiety.  We work closely with schools (staff, parents, students) through offering educational talks, workshops, support groups, trainings, and program development.

Who struggles with eating disorders?

Eating disorders can impact both males and females, across all ages and backgrounds. They typically start between the ages of 14-20 years.

What role does a school play in promoting a healthy body image and healthy lifestyle?

Schools play a key role in the intellectual, physical, social, emotional and moral development and wellbeing of children and adolescents in the UAE. Therefore, it is vital to psycho-educate students around body image, disordered eating, the risks of strict unhealthy diets and eating disorders.

Psychoeducation and training for staff, parents and students:

  •  Prevention, rather than intervention: Having correct information about eating disorders can help in preventing them from happening. It can also help reduce the stigma around these illnesses, which often inhibits young people from seeking help.
  • Promote positive body image and healthy lifestyle choices: Integrating positive thinking and choices into teaching programs

The LightHouse Arabia recommends a 'Whole school approach' to prevention, early intervention and management of eating disorders. Please see below for the support services we offer.
