Consultant Psychiatrist

Dr. Saman Ahmed

Good mental health is a journey, not a destination. Let me accompany you on that journey.

I am a very passionate health professional who believes in high standard of evidence-based care delivered with compassion. Psychiatry for me is the best example of holistic care which delivers care on the bio-psycho-social model. There is as huge responsibility on psychiatrist not only to keep up-to-date with mental health knowledge, but the also the impact of physical health on patients mental health and vice versa. I believe in life-long learning.

After graduating, I moved to the UK to start my foundation programme, over which I developed interest in psychiatry. I was determined to have a robust medical foundation; hence, I worked in various accident and emergency departments for a couple of years before embarking onto psychiatry training. I completed both my Core and Specialist training in London, and gained a dual CCT in both General Adult and Old age psychiatry. As a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, I have played an active part in college by participating in events and doing poster and verbal presentations.

My NHS experience spans over 18 years. In addition to a varied clinical experience, I have taken part in research, leadership and service development, and also Education and mentoring roles. I was the Deputy Associate Medical Director of Acute services in my last Trust, and also an Associate Dean for undergraduate medical education attached to the Barts and London Medical School. I was actively involved in putting systems in place, both for safe clinical care, but also to train future doctors over the COVID-19 period. I have a very flexible approach towards seeing patients; not only have I seen patients in clinics, wards, patient homes (including care homes), but also in A&E departments, and in police custody. At times, I have seen patients remotely and offered consultations in other languages that I speak.

My clinical experience includes inpatient and community care, both in adult and older adult services, eating disorders, liaison psychiatry, perinatal psychiatry, crisis and home treatment team and memory services. I hope to reduce stigma and make mental health services accessible for all in a culturally and religiously sensitive way. I firmly believe that everyone can have the opportunity to have a happy and peaceful life. My primary tool is an innate empathy that I have refined with training, and that leads me to have a warm and welcoming therapeutic approach.
